Distribution of tasks in the health care sector

At national, regional and local levels, politicians determine the framework for the healthcare sector and how the sector should develop in the future. Furthermore, politicians are responsible for overarching decision-making regarding the allocation of resources for prevention and treatment.

The regions are in charge of running hospitals and – through collective agreements – the general practitioner system. The local government is in charge of work relating to prevention and healthcare offered to the public. The Danish Health and Medicines Authority is responsible for determining the professional settings for the work of the Danish healthcare system.
